What is Hot & Cold Stone Massage Therapy?
The idea behind this form of massage therapy is that the stones become an extension of the therapists’ hands, healing, balancing and allowing deeper pressure and relaxation.
Hot stone therapy is fast becoming popular around the world, specifically in spas and other wellness-related industries where it is used to treat muscle tension, increase circulation, increase cellular metabolism and increase relaxation.
It is an ancient practice performed by many cultures as far back as 1,000 years. It is believed in some cultures and practices that certain stones used can do wonders to realign us with nature and help create balance in our physical and emotional lives.
How is it done?
Various sized stones are used for different areas of the body. Large placement stones are placed on the back while the legs are being massaged with smaller stones, and can be placed on the bed for the client to lie on; for example, under the shoulders. When the client turns over stones can be placed under their stomach and on the soles of the feet. Smaller stones can be placed between the fingers or toes. Stones are reheated in hot water when they cool down.
